Journey to Sillustani or on route – Half day
The Highlands was the only place where the Incas built the funeral towers or chullpas with great skill and perfection. Sillustani is considered the largest cemetery and a valuable archaeological and spiritual place. This is located in a peninsula facing the Umayo Lake and houses the remains of chullpas (towers that symbolize life and birth) the archaeological complex is notable for its massive towers built by the Kolla and Inca cultures to bury their dead. These funeral building are surrounded by the serene beauty of Puna. The architects chose this spectacular scenery at the top and facing Lake Umayo for their greatest work. They are almost 90 chulllpas in an area of 150 hectares, many of them are higher than 12 metres and have a larger diameter at the top than on the basis, this a challenge to the laws of gravity and balance. These details make them unique on the continent. Long before the Inca expansion, these buildings were the place of burial of the noble kings of cultures pre incas as Pucara and Kolla. Later the site was occupied by the incas and the largest tower took around 50 years to be finished, this impressive site combines archaeology, culture and history with a incredible natural landscape, all surrounded by the Umayo Lake.
